In many organizations, business requirements don’t always follow a fixed Monday-to-Friday schedule. Employees may occasionally be asked to work on weekends or public holidays to meet operational needs. To ensure fairness and maintain work–life balance, companies offer Compensatory Off, commonly known as Comp Off

This blog explains what Compensatory Off means, when it applies, how it is used, and the process for requesting it.

What Is Compensatory Off?

Compensatory Off is a form of paid leave granted to employees who work on days that are otherwise considered non-working days, such as weekly rest days or declared holidays. Instead of receiving overtime pay, employees are allowed to take time off on a later working day as compensation for the extra effort.

This system helps organizations manage workloads efficiently while ensuring employees are not disadvantaged for working beyond their regular schedule.

Meaning of Compensatory Off

In simple terms, Compensatory Off is a leave credit earned when an employee performs official duties on a non-working day. The earned leave can then be used on a future working day, subject to approval.

Many companies prefer Comp Off over overtime payments, as it supports employee well-being and encourages balance between work and personal life.

When Does Compensatory Off Apply?

Compensatory Off may be granted under the following situations:

  • Working on a weekly rest day, such as a Sunday
  • Performing official duties on a public or national holiday
  • Handling urgent or time-sensitive work that requires attendance on a non-working day

Final eligibility is determined by company policy and requires approval from the reporting manager.

Time Limit for Using Compensatory Off

Indian labour laws do not define a fixed validity period for Compensatory Off. As a result, organizations set their own timelines.

In most companies:

  • Comp Off must be used within two to four weeks
  • Unused Comp Off may expire automatically
  • Extensions are usually not allowed unless specifically approved

Employees are advised to plan and utilize Comp Off within the permitted time frame.

Common Rules and Guidelines for Compensatory Off

Work Duration Requirement

Typically, working a full day on a non-working day qualifies for one Compensatory Off. Partial work may be considered based on internal policies.

Official Travel

Travel alone may not qualify for Comp Off. However, if the travel includes official responsibilities such as meetings, inspections, or site visits, Comp Off may be approved.

Approval and Documentation

Compensatory Off must be:

  • Approved by the immediate reporting manager
  • Recorded through the company’s HR or leave management system

Proper documentation helps avoid disputes and ensures compliance.

Weekly Rest Day Rules in India

Indian labour laws aim to protect employee welfare by ensuring:

  • A maximum of 48 working hours per week
  • At least one mandatory weekly day of rest
  • Compensation for work done beyond prescribed limits

Compensatory Off allows organizations to meet business needs while staying aligned with these labour principles.
